Tony Nominations 2022

The Tony Awards are just around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited!

The Awards will take place on June 12 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Unfortunately, for us Australians it can be a bit difficult to view the awards, so we’ve attached a sneaky guide for Broadway lovers to get their fix.

With so many different nominated plays, we thought it would be fun to share our predictions for the awards.

It’s been an eventful season, and we’re looking forward to all the fashion and twists the award show has in store. Following the monumental smack on the Oscars, will there be a similar incident with this year’s Tony Awards?

A-List Attendees

Well before we dive into the winner predictions per major category, let’s see the A-list stars that are confirmed in attendance:

Andrew Garfield, Bowen Yang, and Jennifer Hudson are among the stars set to celebrate Broadway’s biggest night. The three actors have been announced as presenters for the 2022 Tony Awards.

“Drag Race” mastermind RuPaul will also be in attendance, and the ceremony will feature an appearance by two of Michael Jackson’s children, Prince and Paris Jackson. A musical about their father’s life, “MJ the Musical,” premiered earlier this year, and is nominated for 10 awards at the ceremony.

Think any of these A-list stars will trend in this year’s award show? What will they wear? Who will they bring with them? Apart from presenting and being in attendance, do you think there will be any surprises? Take the Neil Patrick Harris surprise presentation every time he hosts the Tonys (god we miss him). Place all these questions on Buddybet!

But back to the winner predictions, here is a rough tea on who’s leading and who’s more likely to win.

In the Best Musical category…

The season’s musical favourite  “A Strange Loop.” By Michael R. Jackson’s Broadway casts a light on the Black LGBT experience in New York City. When it premiered off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in 2019, the show was a tremendous hit, and Jackson’s musical won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2020. Expect a lot of love for “A Strange Loop,” featuring Jacquel Spivey, the show’s star, and another rookie. Will they get a chance in this year’s best musical category?

Other Best Musical contenders

The West End’s “Six” is a success that became a Broadway phenomenon. Set against the backdrop of an “American Idol”-style competition, “Six” centres on King Henry VIII’s six wives and has been a critical and box office success. “Six” will almost certainly receive a nomination for Best Musical, but will any of the queens make the cut for the performance category of the actress in a leading role in a musical?

In the Best Play category…

“The Lehman Trilogy” is a three-act play about the financial firm Lehman Brothers’ rise and fall. This show is a shoo-in for a Tony Award for Best Play, and we bet at least one of the three leads — Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley, or Adrian Lester – will be recognized for their work.

Other best play contenders

Tracy Letts, a Tony-winning playwright, and actor, returns to the stage with his important new play “The Minutes.” The show takes place in the little town of Big Cherry during a city council meeting. Will this bag a win on this year’s award show?

Martin McDonagh’s thriller-meets-drama-meets-comedy “Hangmen” will almost certainly receive a Best Play nomination. “Hangmen” is set in the United Kingdom shortly after hangings were outlawed. Off-Broadway at The Atlantic Theatre Company in 2018, the show was a critical and commercial success.
